Edward W. McCaskey, chairman emeritus of the Bears’ board of directors, died Tuesday at 83 at his home in Des Plaines.
The husband of team owner Virginia Halas McCaskey and father of 11 children, McCaskey had been in declining health and uncharacteristically missed last month’s NFL owners meetings in Phoenix while recuperating from surgery.
Since Virginia McCaskey controls more than 80 percent of the Bears’ stock, no significant restructure of club ownership is necessary or anticipated.
“Ed’s leadership and his love of life gave all of us at the Chicago Bears a real sense of family. He will be greatly missed,” Bears President Ted Phillips said. “Ed was a mentor, a sounding board and a trusted confidante not only to me, but to many individuals throughout the National Football League.”
McCaskey was a decorated World War II veteran and a former nightclub singer who married into pro football’s first family. Considered an outsider by father-in-law and Bears founder George Halas, McCaskey eventually earned a minor job with the team and evolved from singer to the unsung glue in a tumultuous family business.
McCaskey’s steady manner, keen sense of humor and engaging personality served as a buffer within the Halas family
