Mitchener History 4220: The Renaissance Wednesday, March 4, 2015 Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533 – 1592) was an admired statesman and one of the most noted philosophers of the Renaissance period, namely, the French Renaissance, in 16th century Europe. His Essays, which he viewed as “trials” of his own judgment and intellectual abilities – “Essay” means “try,” or “trial” in French – and of which he is the inventor (that is, Essay as a literary genre), although often personal, are not, unlike some noted autobiographical works, intimate or confessional. Montaigne, in his essays, considers many themes, such as the education of children, happiness, age, drunkenness, fear, experience, vanity, the study of philosophy as a preparation for death, and so forth. His essays, in length, vary from one to two, to over a hundred pages. Montaigne, living in 16th century France, witnessed the cruelty which was, it seems, motivated by religiously driven zeal.
